First responders were dispatched to a Park Avenue residence at approximately 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, when a neighbor saw smoke coming from a basement apartment and called the fire department.
Deputy Fire Chief Daniel Flynn said that one resident in the building was able to open the door to the basement apartment in an effort to assist an elderly resident, though he was pushed back by heavy smoke and unable to reach her. Fire crews worked quickly to get the woman out of the building, and she was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Yonkers Police Det. Sgt. Dean Politopoulos said late on Tuesday afternoon that the cause of the fire is being actively investigated. He identified the victim as Park Avenue resident Ida Martinez.
No cause for the fire has been determined, and it remains under investigation. Politopoulos said that no other injuries have been reported.
